How to block adult content on the iPhone and iPad in iOS 9

My little girl has had her iPad since she was two years old (yes I know I'm one of those parents), most of the games she plays are educational and we also use it to read books together. Her 8th birthday just passed and I was showing her for the first time how to find pictures of fairy cakes through Google images.

This is the first time she's ever used a web browser and it occurred to me just how easy it might be for her to click a link that takes her somewhere I'd rather her not end up, so I immediately jumped into Settings to see if I had any control and to my delight Apple has made it easier than ever to block adult content keeping your children relatively safe. Here's how

  • Open the Settings App and choose General
  • Select Restrictions and enter or setup a passocde
  • Scroll down to Allowed Content and choose Websites
  • Choose Limit Adult Content
iOS Restictions

Restrictions also let you disable Safari all together as well as other apps and also let you set the ratings for apps and media your child can download.

Once you set up the restrictions doing a search for possible harmful material simply brings up a  screen telling you that the site has been restricted.

Site Restricted

It's important to note that while Apple does a pretty good job at blocking the harmful content it's not 100% foolproof and applies only to Safari not 3rd party browser apps that you download so as always the best way to protect your children is to keep an eye on what they're doing.
