Apple Reminders vs Things 3 in 2024 - Why I've moved

Apple Reminders and Things 3 are both amazing task management apps for iOS and Mac users. I’ve been using Things 3 for a long time, it’s just such a simple and beautiful app to use, but recently I decided to switch to Apple Reminders and in this post, I will explain why I made the jump and what are the main differences between the two apps.

Features Comparison

Let’s start by comparing the features of Apple Reminders and Things 3. Here is a table that summarizes the main features of each app:

Both apps have a lot of features. Apple Reminders is free and has location-based reminders, tags, attachments and links, and customisable and shared lists. Things 3 is paid and has tags, calendar integration, and a more elegant design.

Why I moved to Apple Reminders

So, why did I choose Apple Reminders over Things 3? Here are some of the reasons:

  • Simplicity: Apple Reminders is simple and easy to use. It has a clean and intuitive interface that lets me create and manage tasks quickly and effortlessly. Things 3 is also simple, but it has more options and menus that can mean I waste too much time getting into the weeds.

  • Compatibility: Apple Reminders is compatible with all iOS and Mac devices, and it syncs seamlessly with iCloud. It also integrates well with other Apple apps and services, such as Siri, Shortcuts, Notes, Mail, and more. Things 3 is also compatible and syncs well, but it does not have the same level of integration with Apple’s ecosystem.

  • Location-based Reminders: This is one of the features that I love the most about Apple Reminders. It allows me to set reminders that are triggered by my location, such as reminding me to buy something when I am near a specific store, or to call someone when I get home. This is very useful and convenient for me, as I often forget things when I am out and about. Things 3 does not have this feature, and I miss it a lot.

  • Attachments and Links: Another feature that I find very handy is the ability to add attachments and links to my reminders. This allows me to add more detail and context to my tasks, such as photos, documents, web pages, and more. This makes my tasks more meaningful and actionable, and helps me remember what I need to do. Things 3 does not support attachments and I feel that it limits the usefulness of my tasks.

  • Customizable Lists: Apple Reminders lets me customize my lists with different colors and icons, which makes them more attractive and organized. I can also create smart lists that automatically group my tasks based on criteria such as due date, priority, or flag. This helps me sort and filter my tasks easily and efficiently. Things 3 does not have customizable lists, and I find its default lists boring and rigid.

  • Shared Lists: Finally - I have to use Reminders anyway with my family as it has shared lists. With all the new functionality it has introduced I just find it easier to have all my tasks, house jobs and grocery lists all in one place that that my family can add to from their devices.

Conclusion

Apple Reminders and Things 3 are both great task management apps and I know that many people will have their own opinions. However, for me, Apple Reminders is the better choice, as it offers more features that suit my needs and preferences. It’s simple, compatible with all my devices, location-based, attachment-friendly and has shared lists.

Finally, It is also free, which will be a bonus for many people!
